What is Rec and Rec Plus?

Rec / Rec Plus are SCOR's Recreation Division and are open to all players regardless of playing experience or ability. The Rec programs is for PreK through Grade 4, and Rec Plus is for Grade 5 through High School.

It is SCOR's philosophy that players develop best when exposed to a variety of teammates and coaches - all team assignments are based on this philosophy.

All players wishing to play on a Rec team need only register for the upcoming season. There is no "tryout" or evaluation process.  SCOR does supply uniform shirts for all Rec players.

Practices: PreK, K, and 1st grade do not have practices. Grade 2 and up have one weekday practice per week, for one hour,
at a designated practice time and location in Ridgefield.

Games: Rec teams (PreK - Grade 4) have one game per week, on Saturdays, at a designated time and location in Ridgefield. Rec Plus (Grade 5 and up) teams frequently play against teams from other towns, therefore the Rec Plus schedules are determined by CJSA, not SCOR. Rec Plus home games will occur on Saturdays at a designated time and place in Ridgefield, similar to Rec. However, Rec Plus away games will also take place on Saturdays, but the times/locations will be determined by the opposing team. All Rec and Rec Plus games are scheduled between 8 AM and 2 PM (excluding certain makeup games).

Rec/Rec Plus Coach Information
For divisions with no weekday practices (PreK - Grade 1), SCOR relies entirely on parent volunteers to coach their teams during the Saturday games.

For divisions with weekday practices (Grade 2 through high school), a professional coach assigned through Team Excel will lead the practice sessions. The practice curriculum is determined by Team Excel's President, Phil Bergen and Coaching Director, Ali Rettenmeier.  Parent volunteer coaches lead the team during games on Saturdays - parent coaches are not required at practices but are strongly encouraged to attend the practices to observe and/or assist the professional coaches.

Volunteers
In the pursuit of its commitment to excellence, SCOR is heavily dependent on members willing to share their time and love of the game. For Rec and Rec Plus divisions, we rely on parent volunteers for three primary roles:

- Division Director (PreK - Grade 4): assist SCOR in identifying parent coach volunteers, creating rosters, and communicating with coaches and managers across their division.
- Team Manager (Grade 5 and up): communicate with division director, team players / parents / coaches, and opposing team managers.
- Parent Coach (all ages): lead the team during the Saturday games.

If you are interested in volunteering your time as a coach, assistant coach, manager of a team, or in any other way, please contact us

Equipment
All players MUST wear shin guards and soccer shoes to ALL practices and games. Sneakers are acceptable footwear in PreK & K only. The SCOR/CJSA player insurance is only 100% applicable for players wearing proper equipment. As representatives of SCOR on the field, Coaches and Managers must enforce this safety requirement. In addition, players should bring water, a bag to put their things in (optional), and a soccer ball appropriate to their Division.

Ball Sizes:

  • Pre-K, K and 1st Grade: size 3
  • Grade 2 to Grade 6: size 4
  • Grade 7 and up: size 5

For the safety of all players, jewelry is not allowed during practice or  games; earrings are no longer allowed to be taped and must be removed.

Recreation Plus

RECREATION PLUS PROGRAM
 (5th-6th Grade through High School)

Description
Rec Plus is an extension of the Rec Program.  The primary difference between Rec Plus and Rec is the travel element, level of competition, and team composition.  Our Rec Plus teams may travel up to 50% of the time.  While Rec Plus is a part of Rec, we have found the competition to be higher than in Rec's younger divisions.  In the league, many Rec Plus players have both Travel and Rec experience.

Each division is broken up in to teams and each team has a volunteer coach and parent manager for the Saturday games. The teams will travel to other towns (described below).

Divisions
Rec Plus is offered in 5th-6th grade through High School. Ridgefield Rec Plus teams may play a Rec Plus team from Wilton, New Canaan, Westport, Darien, Rowayton, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Weston, Newtown or others.

Coaching
Ridgefield's Rec Plus teams are lead by professional coaches during the weekly practice. All players from the same grade levels practice together under the guidance of a SCOR professional coach. Parent coaches and managers are needed to lead the team during the Saturday games.  We look to assign one team manager and at least one team coach.

Games
All games are scheduled on Saturdays.  Games are generally scheduled late morning and early afternoon.  Game schedules are prepared by volunteer Rec Plus League Directors.  The directors are from the participating towns. All information regarding games (time, location, etc.) is found on the SWD CJSA site at www.swdcjsa.org. This should be your go-to place for game information.

Practices
Rec Plus practices are held on Wednesday or Friday per schedule.

Jamborees
Individual clubs have organized soccer jamborees for teams within the division.  Various formats have been used.  All jamborees are held in one day and usually extend for 3-4 hours.
