What is Rec and Rec Plus?

Rec is SCOR's Recreation Division. It is divided into Rec (PK through Grade 4) and Rec Plus for grades 5 through high school.

It is SCOR's philosophy that players develop best when exposed to a variety of teammates and coaches. All team assignments are based on this philosophy.

All players wishing to play on a Rec team need only register for the upcoming season. There is no "tryout" or evaluation process.  SCOR does supply uniform shirts for all Rec players.

Rec teams practice one day during the week, at a designated practice time (except PreK, K and 1st Grade who do not have practices). All Rec games are scheduled on Saturdays between 8 AM and 2 PM, the exceptions being make-ups or Jamborees.

Rec/Rec Plus Coach Information
For Rec (PreK-1st grade), SCOR relies completely on parent volunteers to coach their team on Saturdays during game day (there are no weekly practices for this age group). For 2nd grade through high school, a professional coach, assigned through Team Excel, leads the weekly practice. The practice session is held for one hour one time a week. The practice curriculum is determined by Team Excel's President, Phil Bergen and Coaching Director, Ali Rettenmeier.  Volunteer coaches lead the team during games on Saturdays and are highly encouraged to attend the practices during the week to assist the professional coaches.

Volunteers
In the pursuit of its commitment to excellence, SCOR is heavily dependent on members willing to share of themselves. If you are interested in volunteering your time as a coach, assistant coach, manager of a team, or in any other way, please contact us.

Equipment
All players MUST, in practice and in game play, wear shin guards and soccer shoes. Sneakers are acceptable footwear in PreK & K only. The SCOR/CJSA player insurance is only 100% applicable for players wearing proper equipment. As representatives of SCOR on the field, Coaches and Managers must enforce this safety requirement. In addition, players should bring water, a bag to put their things in (optional), and a soccer ball appropriate to their Division.

Ball Sizes:

  • #3 for Pre-K, K and 1st Grade
  • #4 for 2nd to 6th Grade
  • #5 for 7th Grade and above

For the safety of all players, jewelry is not allowed during practice and play; earrings are not allowed to be taped and must be removed.

The Rec Extra Training programs are integrated with SCOR's Rec program.  Rec Extra Training players train with a professional coach once a week to enhance  their skills and knowledge of the game so that they can incorporate that learning into games on Saturdays with their team.   For more information about Rec Extra Training, click here.

Jamborees
Individual clubs have organized soccer jamborees for teams within the division by season.  Various formats have been used.  All jamborees are held in one day and usually extend for 3-4 hours.

Recreation Plus

RECREATION PLUS PROGRAM
 (5th-6th Grade through High School)

Description
Rec Plus is an extension of the Rec Program.  The primary difference between Rec Plus and Rec is the travel element, level of competition, and team composition.  Our Rec Plus teams may travel up to 50% of the time.  While Rec Plus is a part of Rec, we have found the competition to be higher than in Rec's younger divisions.  In the league, many Rec Plus players have both Travel and Rec experience.

Each division is broken up in to teams and each team has a volunteer coach and parent manager for the Saturday games. The teams will travel to other towns (described below).

Divisions
Rec Plus is offered in 5th-6th grade through High School. Ridgefield Rec Plus teams may play a Rec Plus team from Wilton, New Canaan, Westport, Darien, Rowayton, Norwalk, Bridgeport, Weston, Newtown or others.

Coaching
Ridgefield's Rec Plus teams are lead by professional coaches during the weekly practice. All players from the same grade levels practice together under the guidance of a SCOR professional coach. Parent coaches and managers are needed to lead the team during the Saturday games.  We look to assign one team manager and at least one team coach.

Games
All games are scheduled on Saturdays.  Games are generally scheduled late morning and early afternoon.  Game schedules are prepared by volunteer Rec Plus League Directors.  The directors are from the participating towns. All information regarding games (time, location, etc.) is found on the SWD CJSA site at www.swdcjsa.org. This should be your go-to place for game information.

Practices
Rec Plus practices are held on Wednesday or Friday per schedule.

Jamborees
Individual clubs have organized soccer jamborees for teams within the division.  Various formats have been used.  All jamborees are held in one day and usually extend for 3-4 hours.
